There are a lot of people following this blog, and it is amazing that his story is touching so many lives. I hope these daily updates help all of you who love John to know how much of a fighter he truly he. I also hope one day, Uncle John can sit down at his computer and read over his journey so that he too can truly know how far he has come. The following is a list of some things he did today.
- Told Aunt Maureen that they still need to celebrate her birthday (the incident occurred on her birthday)!
- Arm wrestled his sister in law
- Smiled and laughed
- Communicated through mouthing words, as well as through sign....I can't believe it has taken him this long to learn sign language!
- Hugged his daughter
* He did a lot more than this today, but these definitely seemed like highlights.
Uncle John had a fever tonight, so the doctors took cultures to try to find out more about what is going on. We need to pray that John is able to fight a possible infection in his lungs or elsewhere in his body. His lungs seem to be the biggest issue right now. Uncle John's immune system is very vulnerable right now, so an infection would be harder for Uncle John to fight than a healthy person. Pray that the medical team is able to identify the source of his fever, and are able to treat it before it worsens. Uncle John is in good hands at Washington Hospital, but as Aunt Maureen reminded me today, doctors can only do so much...the rest is in His hands! So we need to keep praying!

Joy is of the will which labours, which overcomes obstacles, which knows triumph.

I have known John professionally for over 25 years, and have long been aware of what a great person he is and how much he is devoted to his family. These days he is in my thoughts and prayers constantly. Please let him know that I am confident that the "Irish" in him will enable him to get through this.

Dear Hannan's, Marv, Kathy, Andy and Tess Reitz are all praying every day for you. Having had extensive experience with Washington Hospital Center and later NRH, I know you are in good hands from a medical point of view and even better hands from the spiritual point of view. Andy remembers John's kind and supportive attitude on the baseball field with the St. Mary's team. Fun times and happy memories. We've been asking Fr. Lubey to remember his old friend too.
ReplyDeleteHi Hannans! It's Katie Whalen. When I think of your situation, I imagine if it were my own father and my empathy for what you are going through is overwhelming to say the least. It is very emotional and draining and I am not even experiencing it first hand. At the same time, what is so wonderful, from an outsider looking in, is that it really seems that God is giving you peaceful moments sprinkled in with the difficult ones, isn't He. It seems that your collective faith is being challenged and you are really letting go and trusting God along the way. I would imagine a tragedy such as this would bring the family so close together and I'm positive Mr. Hannan feels this support. In reality, although you all feel you are the luckiest people on earth to have such a great person to share your lives with (and you are), he is also the luckiest person to have a team behind him like all of you. I have no doubt that the reason he has fought so hard is because a life with all of you is well worth fighting for. And if the tables were turned, and it was one of you in his position, he would he would be doing exactly what you all are doing because each of you are as special.
ReplyDeleteYour family has always held a significant place in my heart and always will. I just want to share with all of you the memories I have of Mr. Hannan (I already shared some of this with Shawn over the phone). I can still picture him in the stands of our St. Mary's basketball games screaming and clapping "GO SHAWNY". I can picture him (myself as a little child only coming up to his hip) at St. Mary's functions chatting with the parents with his arms folded or in his pockets rocking back and forth. I think children are very observant of personality and I must have gotten really comforting feelings about Mr. Hannan for them to stick with me till this day.
Keep on keeping on...and know that you have a lot of people with you on this journey because of the wonderful people you are...you earned it. I love you Hannan family!
Finally, Bridget, you are a wonderful writer. I think this every time I read a new entry. Thank you so much for keeping the what seems like millions of people up to date on the journey. Not only are you helping all of us out but more importantly giving the Hannan's opportunities to have peace and quiet without having to update everyone on what goes on in the Hospital.
Once again, I love you all,
Katie Whalen

Dear Maureen, John and family,
ReplyDeleteThe Corbeys, Scullens, Divitas, and Slatterys are all praying for John and each one of you. If you need anything at all, please let us know how we can help. There are several prayer groups who are keeping John in their prayers. We love you all and are here if you need anything at all.
Saying hey to all the Hannan's, those near and far, to take a moment and drop a word to the Creator of us all and mention this good little Irishman named of John, who just happened to fall a prey to a little bad luck. But as the Irish have it, bad luck is only as good as there is bad in the beholder, and that is none when ya think of our brother John. This is yore cousin, Rogers, or Bu as some may know me from the past days...now, some call me Brother Rogers...I've been amazed at the grams of all sorts posted and think how 'truly blessed' you are John Hannan to have such a following...Maureen know that you all are close as the Good Lord can hold ya right now...It's moments like this that bring us all to a closer awareness of our Maker...and we should be close at all times, but we're human, unfortunately...or fortunately as in most cases, depending on how ya look at the glass... Let's all give some thanks to God this day, night, moment for family, friends, and most of all for the Love that God has placed in us all for each other that we may do our utmost to pass on a 'bit o peace' in the world, so that times of togetherness may exist for all God's people... Pass on some love to John, Robert, Paul, and all the Hannan clan...I just may have to find a way from the hollows of West Virginia where I'm laying my head right now. But my mind, heart, and soul are with the Hannan clan right now. You all 'keep the Sun shinin'...You're all close in thought and prayer...Peace, Love, and Joy along the Way...
